People Magazine exaggerates Bill Cosby’s possible sentence

Filed under: News by Steven F. Fairlie @ July 13, 2018

People Magazine.  An international juggernaut.  You would think they have the resources to get it right?  Maybe ask an attorney…  Instead, they wrote that Bill Cosby faces 30 years in jail.  Convicted of three counts, each punishable by up to 10 years in jail, I can see where the mistake comes from.  But come on, People Magazine, any lawyer practicing criminal law knows that these three counts merge at sentencing so the sentences can’t be made to run consecutively.  So the maximum time is 10 years in jail – one third of the period that People Magazine reported.  Fake news or lazy news?  Please comment below.

As usual, the media exaggerates the truth. This is nothing new. The actual truth doesn’t boost sales and/or viewership. If a private party did this they would be prosecuted.
