Did you know that in Chicago you don’t have to be sane to be a judge? Even stranger, you can remain a Judge after you have been found to be legally insane. The Honorable Cynthia Brim, who has been diagnosed with a bipolar type of schizoaffective disorder, was charged with misdemeanor battery for shoving a deputy and throwing keys at him outside a courthouse last spring. The 54-year-old judge was not taking her medication at the time of the incident, which is why The Honorable Liam Brennan found her not guilty by reason of insanity. Despite this, she remains a judge and is still paid her salary. When Brim is on her medication she is fine; when she doesn’t take her medication, however, she could be legally insane.
This was not her first meltdown. Brim has reportedly been hospitalized five times in the past for psychotic episodes. The Chicago Tribune reported that she is under investigation by Illinois’ Judicial Inquiry Board for violating the code of professional responsibility several times. The Board will decide her fate as a judge, but until then, she still holds the position, although she will not hear any cases. Brim will be in court in March for a hearing about her mental health treatment.
